Klopp lucky to be let off for disrespectful ‘clapping’ of lino and smiling with officials afterwards doesn’t cut it

JURGEN KLOPP was extremely lucky to escape any punishment from the match officials for sarcastically applauding assistant referee Gary Beswick.

The Liverpool manager’s actions towards Beswick were out of order and disrespectful.

But the officials at Brighton on Saturday were weak in dealing with Klopp’s touchline conduct.

Part of fourth official Simon Hooper’s job is to keep an eye on the managers and he should have seen the clapping at Beswick.

I felt Hooper should have alerted referee Stuart Attwell and issued Klopp with a minimum of a yellow card, or sent him to the stands.

I would be surprised if the FA now take any action, because Beswick and presumably Hooper saw the incident. It should have been dealt with on the day.

It’s not the first time I’ve seen Klopp berating match officials.

He is always on the TV smiling with the officials but I’m reliably informed that is just for the cameras and he isn’t a fan of them.

Klopp is a winner and he’s no different to what we have seen in the past from the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho on the touchline. But his conduct towards officials needs to improve.

On the penalty itself for Andy Robertson’s kick on Danny Welbeck, why was Klopp moaning?

I didn’t see him comment when Mo Salah was awarded a penalty for similar contact from West Ham’s Arthur Masuaku.

My concern at the moment is the implementation of VAR. They are getting involved too much and creating inconsistency.

The West Brom penalty that was overturned last week was more of a spot-kick than the Brighton one.

I’ve heard Jordan Henderson and James Milner want VAR scrapped but it’s here to stay. It’s our use of the technology that has to be the biggest lesson here.

I was surprised Attwell took just one look of the incident in slow-motion at the monitor. Did he make the final decision, or was he told what call to make by the VAR?

It’s important everyone hears the conversation between the VAR and referee moving forward.
