Man Utd star Luke Shaw hopes deadline-day signings can have same impact as Bruno Fernandes and ‘boost morale’ at club

LUKE SHAW hopes Manchester United’s deadline-day signings can have the same impact as Bruno Fernandes and ‘boost morale’ at the club.

The Red Devils have endured a difficult start to the season with a shock home defeat to Crystal Palace and then the 6-1 humiliation against Tottenham.

They brought in Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri on the final day of the transfer window – while Amad Diallo will join in January.

And defender Shaw, 25, is desperate to see the new arrivals make a difference in the same way Fernandes did earlier in the year.

He told the club website: “We’ve got a few new arrivals in and that can maybe boost the morale of the squad and bring something different.

“Fresh faces are sometimes a good thing. Like we saw with Bruno, it can change completely the mood of a squad.

“Competition for any team is a must.

“There is competition for every single spot and you’ve got to be ready for it, work hard and give the manager a decision harder than what he’s had to make before.

“Competition is very healthy for the squad, it’ll push everyone even more because everyone wants to play.”

Fernandes arrived from Sporting Lisbon on January 30.

His 12 goals and eight assists helped propel United up the table to finish third and reach the Europa League semi-finals.

The Portuguese star, 26, picked up two Premier League player of the month awards and was named Manchester United player of the year.

And despite his club’s poor start, he has already notched up two goals and two assists in 237 minutes of action this term.

Cavani, thought to be on around £200,000 per week, will be unavailable this weekend but could make his debut against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League next week.

Telles, meanwhile, will be battling it out with Shaw for the left-back spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Pellistri, 18, linked up at Carrington for the first time on Wednesday and will be hopeful of hitting the ground running after arriving from Penarol, especially after being named in the A-list for the Champions League.
