Daniel Sturridge announces ‘comeback is near’ as ex-Liverpool star prepares for free transfer after leaving Trabzonspor

DANIEL STURRIDGE has revealed a ‘comeback is near’ as the former Liverpool star gets set to return to football.

The 31-year-old is a free agent having left Trabzonspor in February after being banned from football for four months over a breach of betting rules.

Sturridge has been linked with FIVE clubs with Rangers, managed by his former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard leading the chase.

The striker uploaded a gif of him doing some floor exercises onto Instagram, captioned: “Still active and focused baby. The comeback is near.”

Sturridge has been training at non-league Kidsgrove Athletic to keep fit ahead of his next big move.

He previously uploaded a video to Instagram on the Kidsgrove pitch alongside the caption: “Back at it bruh. The grind don’t stop!!!”

Kidsgrove chairman Mick Fitzjohn joked he has signed a 12-month deal with the club.

Reported by the Stoke Sentinel, he said: “Yes, he’s signed a 12-month contract.

“No, he’s coming down to keep himself fit and he’s working hard while he finds a new club.

“He comes down most days and he can let himself in. He lives locally and we don’t mind that. It’s a nice set-up.

“I’ve been down there painting but we haven’t chucked him a brush just yet to help out.”

According to The Times, Premier League Aston Villa, Scottish giants Rangers, Italian outfit Benevento and the MLS could all be possible destinations for the former England man.

Sheffield United were also believed to be ready to offer him a lifeline before they snapped up Rhian Brewster from Liverpool for £23.5m on transfer deadline day.

And there are even calls from some fans of Trabzonspor for the club to try tempt him back to Turkey.

Sturridge saw his three-year deal with Turks Trabzonspor terminated after the FA won an appeal against an initial two-week suspension, imposed in July.

He was found guilty of two breaches over transfer information given to family members.

And an independent appeal board whacked up the ban and doubled an initial fine to £150,000, after also upholding two of nine charges which had originally been dismissed.

Sturridge and his club announced the striker’s contract had been ended “by mutual consent”.

He scored seven goals in 16 games for Trabzonspor after joining them in August 2019.
