Lewis Hamilton nearing one-race F1 ban after Mercedes world champ picks up four more penalty points during Austria GP

LEWIS HAMILTON is over halfway towards picking up a driving ban after accruing more points on his Formula 1 licence.

The world champion was slapped with four penalty points at the Austrian Grand Prix to bring his total to seven for the 12-month period.

F1’s rules state that any driver picking up 12 points in a year would be hit with a one-race ban.

Hamilton was slapped with two points on Saturday for ignoring waved yellow safety flags telling him to slow down.

He also picked up two more points in Sunday’s race for clashing with Red Bull’s Alex Albon.

Meanwhile, Red Bull boss Christian Horner says he has now warned Albon to “be careful” whenever he races against Hamilton.

Horner says that the six-time world champion needs to face the music after he wiped out Albon for the second time in three races.

It was almost a carbon copy of their clash in the 2019 Brazilian GP in which Hamilton was also deemed to be the offender.

I think it is more perhaps Lewis that the questions should be asked on what he would do differently.”

Horner said: “Alex didn’t have the straight line speed, so he knew he had, with the grip advantage, to pass him in or out of a corner.

“As far as he was concerned, the job was done. He was starting to look down the road towards Valtteri [Bottas] when Lewis put a wheel on the inside.

“So I think it is more perhaps Lewis that the questions should be asked on what he would do differently.

“Alex had won the corner, and was on the exit of the corner. Why Lewis needed to stick a wheel in there, I have no idea.

“It’s obviously frustrating for Alex that this is the second time in three races that this has happened to him.

“It was unfortunate, because I think he would have had a chance to win the race.

“He got the job done going into the corner. Through the corner he was ahead and he was just accelerating out when Lewis put a wheel in the inside of his right rear.”
