CARDIFF CITY displayed a banner in tribute to the late Peter Whittingham ahead of their clash with Leeds today.

The Bluebirds legend passed away in March aged 35 after suffering head injuries following an accident at a pub in Barry.

In their first match since Whittingham’s tragic passing, Cardiff unveiled a banner with the words “City loves you more than you will know” across a section of seats in the Ninian Stand.

Whittingham spent 11 seasons at Cardiff between 2006 and 2017, making 457 appearances and scoring 96 goals.

He was a key part of the sides that reached the FA Cup final in 2008 and the League Cup final in 2012, as well as promotion to the Premier League in 2013.

Cardiff’s Junior Hoilett also paid respect to his former teammate, celebrating his goal by raising Whittingham’s iconic No.7 shirt above his head.

The midfielder was the main feature of the club’s match day programme and a minute’s applause was held before kick-off.

Cardiff beat Leeds 2-0 to move up to seventh in the Championship.

Hoilett opened the scoring on 35 minutes with a left-foot drive from 20 yards, before Robert Glatzel made it 2-0 in the 71st minute after Leeds were caught playing it out from the back.

The win puts Cardiff level on points with Preston who occupy the final play-off spot, with Neil Harris’ men set to visit Deepdale next weekend.
