Watch midfielder miss howler in Monchengladbach win as club joke ‘at least no one was there to see’ Hofmann blunder

FOOTBALL is finally back and with it some beautifully familiar howlers including one shocking miss from the Bundesliga.

The German league is the first major European competition to restart after Covid-19 put pay to the global football schedule back in March.

Empty stadiums and socially distanced subs were new features for fans watching on from the comfort of their own homes but one refreshing old sight remained – a clanger in front of goal.

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Jonas Hofmann was in on an empty goal with opposition Eintracht Frankfurt’s goalkeeper Kevin Trapp stranded.

Hofmann fluffed his lines, though, after taking the ball closer to the goal allowing Frankfurt defender Martin Hinteregger to pull off a remarkable diving block on the line.

Luckily, Hofmann’s blushes were spared by the fact his side won the game 3-1 as he showed signs of rust with players having been out of competitive action for two months.

Monchengladbach even ripped into their own player on social media with the club’s account tweeting out: “At least no one was there to see it.”

Unfortunately for Hofmann, the clip is already doing the rounds online and could swiftly be added to a compilation of unbelievable misses.

Hofmann’s team-mates did not appear to be suffering from the long lay-off without football as they scored two goals in the opening eight minutes to stun hosts Frankfurt in the day’s late kick-off.

Ramy Bensebaini made it three from the penalty spot late on in the second half to secure the win for Marco Rose’s side.

Frankfurt did muster a late consolation courtesy of substitute Andre Silva’s 81st minute strike but Monchengladbach took the spoils and moved into third place.
