Dolors was a former sales assistant, and was married to Pep’s father Valenti, a bricklayer.

They had four children. Pep is their third child, after having two daughters and then finally a second son.

It was understood she had been living in Santpedor, a quiet village in central Catalonia where Pep grew up.

Tottenham Hotspur also sent their condolences, tweeting: “Everyone at Spurs sends their deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with Pep and his family at this time.”

Just weeks ago, Pep donated £920,000 to fight the virus in his native Catalonia, intending for the money to go to medical equipment through the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation.

The tragic news comes after Spain saw its saw its smallest rise in coronavirus deaths for nearly two weeks today.

The new figures offer a glimmer of hope to millions battling the bug across a beleaguered Europe that countries may be starting to turn the tide on the deadly disease.

In Spain – one of the worst hit countries on the continent – the daily death toll dropped for the fourth straight day today, with 637 patients dying overnight, taking the total to 13,055, the government said.

And in a touching moment, health workers were pictured observing a minute’s silence at the entrance of the Hospital Doctor Peset in Valencia, in remembrance of nursing staff who have died due to coronavirus.

Though Spain has the second-highest death toll in the world after Italy, the number of deaths each day has been falling since Thursday’s peak of 950, according to health ministry figures.

After yesterday’s fall, the country’s PM Pedro Sanchez said: “We are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Catalonia, where Pep is from, is the second worst hit region after Madrid.
