In a brief but direct video, Lampard echoed the words of Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he insisted people protected themselves and others in the community from Covid-19.

He said: “To help save lives, you must stay home.

“Only leave your home to buy essential food, medicine or for individual exercise and always stay two metres apart.

“This is an urgent message: stay home, protect the NHS, save lives.”

Manchester City and England winger Raheem Sterling also took to social media to encourage people to remain indoors and support the NHS.

All UK citizens have been ordered to stay at home, but some people – including Sterling’s fellow Premier League footballer Oumar Niasse – have opted to ignore the critical Government advice.

But in a plea to the nation, Sterling said: “You need to stay at home.

“Let’s help our NHS by staying home.

“Only leave your house if you need essential food, medicine or exercise.

“The NHS have been doing a fantastic job, so let’s help them continue doing their wonderful works by just staying at home and protecting our NHS and saving lives.

“And how are we gonna save lives? By staying home – come on guys.”

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi was the first Premier League player to test positive for the deadly bug.

Britain now has over 17,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 – only seven countries have had more.

And 1,019 people have now been killed by the virus in the UK.
