Thomas Tuchel named England manager LIVE – New Three Lions boss unveiled as FA reveal ten candidates were interviewed

THOMAS TUCHEL has been officially unveiled as the new England manager.

The former Chelsea boss has been out of work since he left Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

Lee Carsley took over as interim Three Lions head coach after Gareth Southgate’s departure following the Euro 2024 final.

And on Wednesday, Tuchel was unveiled as the new England boss with the FA confirming they interviewed ten candidates for the post.

  • Carragher – Tuchel will ‘bring the passion’

Former England centre-back Jamie Carragher is excited to see Tuchel take charge for the first time.

And the Sky pundit believes it won’t be dull with the former Chelsea man in the hot seat.

Carragher told Sky: “He will bring unbelievable passion to the England national team, even though he’s a German.

“He’s been passionate about every other job he’s had and I don’t think the England job will be any different.

“I look forward to watching him on the touchline in a World Cup quarter-final.”

  • Tuchel calls on Chelsea’s forgotten man

Tuchel is reportedly using his Chelsea connections to help build his England support team.

The German already confirmed his trusted assistant Anthony Barry – who worked with him at both Chelsea and Bayern Munich – will join as his right-hand man.

According to Di Marzio’s Nathan Gissing, Tuchel will also bring in former Chelsea goalkeeper Henrique Hilario.

The one-time Portugal international is being eyed for a “part-time role” in the England staff.

Hilario made just 39 appearances for Chelsea but was part of the squad for the club’s 2010 Premier League title, 2012 Champions League success and three FA Cup wins.

He has since served as a keeper coach in West London.

  • Tuchel’s first games

Despite signing his contract on October 8, Tuchel will not take charge of England until the New Year.

He starts his new role as Three Lions manager on January 1.

England’s Nations League campaign will signal when Tuchel’s first match on the touchline could be.

Should England finish top ahead of Greece in Group 2, Tuchel will take charge of his first game in March 2025 against a currently unknown team in a World Cup qualifier.

If the Three Lions lose both of their matches next month and Ireland win both of theirs, Tuchel’s first game could be in a Nations League playoff game.

  • Neville – ‘Difficult questions to answer’

Gary Neville has hit out at the FA after the appointment of Thomas Tuchel.

Neville claims the FA needs to answer questions over the decision not to hire an English coach.

He told Sky Sports: “I worked under international coaches for England.

“I loved playing for England while I was working under Terry Venables, Glenn Hoddle, Steve McClaren, Kevin Keegan… and Sven Goran Eriksson – so I didn’t see any difference in terms of my passion for my country when I played under an international coach.

“But what I have seen over the last 15-20 years is the reputational damage that English coaching has taken.

“We are in a rut when it comes to English coaching.

“English coaching is one of the least respected big nations in Europe when it comes to taking charge of a football team.

“We don’t have a clear identity as an English nation, for what we are anymore.”

  • Tuchel England’s ‘best chance’ of success

FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham was bullish at today’s press conference as he lavished praise on Thomas Tuchel.

He said: “This is a really exciting day for the English game.

“We have appointed one of the very best coaches in the world and one of the best young English coaches as his number two.

“Our aim is always to win a major tournament. We believe Thomas gives us the best possible chance to do that at the next men’s World Cup.”

  • Suit yourself

Danny Mills will be amongst those happy to see Thomas Tuchel rep a suit during his opening England press conference.

The former Three Lions full-back bizarrely took aim at Tuchel’s sideline outfits during an interview this morning.

Mills told Sky Sports News: “Often we see him in a hoodie and a cap on the sidelines.

“Will that be his managerial stance as an England manager?

“That’s not really something that we’re used to. It’s really always a suit and looking very, very smart.”

  • Meet the No. 2

Set-piece specialist Anthony Barry will join Tuchel as his assistant coach when the German takes up his new role on January 1.

A former player, Barry was forced to retire after suffering a dislocated kneecap aged just age 24 while playing for Yeovil.

He got his first taste of coaching action with Accrington Stanley’s Under-16 side and then a year later, Barry worked alongside Paul Cook at Wigan.

Barry became a set-piece coach with Chelsea, working with Tuchel – who took him to Bayern Munich in 2023.

On Tuchel, Barry said: “Our relationship is very respectful and friendly.

“I admired Thomas from the first day. We have a lot of parallels – how we work and how we see football.”

  • Tuchel will ‘respect’ anthem

The German was asked during his press conference if he would belt out God Save the King alongside the England players.

He replied: “I have not made my decision yet. Your anthem is very moving.

“I have experienced it a few times, at the FA Cup final for example.

“I have until March. I will always show my respect to the country. But I will take my time.”

  • Carragher on Tuchel appointment

Former Three Lions and Liverpool star Jamie Carragher was impressed by Thomas Tuchel’s debut press conference as England boss.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I thought he came across really well. He’s got charisma, he’s got personality.

“You can see the confidence, perhaps compared to Lee Carsley. He seems like he’s a good fit, certainly in terms of handling the media.

“But I think, if we’re being honest, he’d rather be coaching a top club side rather than England. Maybe that’s why he’s signed an 18-month deal.”

  • Lineker on Tuchel appointment

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has had his say on Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as England manager.

The Three Lions icon, 63, told the BBC: “It is just one last step isn’t it? They made a couple of finals under Gareth Southgate so were knocking on the door.

“There is no question that England have the quality needed to challenge for trophies and the upcoming World Cup. They have the ability throughout.

“Sometimes if you keep knocking on the door then it might just open, and I have no doubt it will with this England squad.

“Whether that is in 18 months’ time or over three years that remains to be seen. It is just about belief so hopefully Tuchel can instil that in them. They should have that because they are so talented.

“He will have difficulties and problems because sometimes having that much talent can be an issue for you. He is going to have to try and keep super high-quality players happy when they are not always playing as he can’t play them all.

“But he is very demanding and driven. He has very good tactical acumen. There is no question that England will be one of the favourites going into the next World Cup.”

Harry Kane has welcome Thomas Tuchel’s England appointment on social media.

  • How England chose Thomas Tuchel

In his opening statement, FA CEO Mark Bullingham lifted the lid on the recruitment process that led to Thomas Tuchel being appointed England manager.

He said: “We had a really clear recruitment plan in place before the Euros.

“John McDermott and the team developed our ideal profile for an international coach and a shortlist if we needed it.

“After Gareth (Southgate) resigned we executed that plan, met and evaluated potential candidates.

“Thomas was absolutely outstanding, providing a clear vision of how he will work with our players to get the best out of them and to give us the best chance in the World Cup.

“We wanted to wait for the international window to be over before we announced it.”

  • New boss to ‘respect’ Carsley

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that he will have no involvement in next month’s England camp.

The Three Lions are set to conclude their Nations League campaign with matches against Greece and Ireland.

With Tuchel not officially starting in the job until January 1, Lee Carsley will remain in caretaker charge for the November games.

The new boss insisted: “It’s very important to give respect to Lee and the upcoming camp in November, without me interfering.”

  • Tuchel addresses Man Utd rumours

Thomas Tuchel was asked about why he took on the England job as his next project, rather than a potential club vacancy at Manchester United.

He replied: “The idea and the way Mark (Bullingham) and John (McDermott) presented it was very fast, very exciting, very confidential and trustful.

“It was very straightforward. This was a decision for this job and not a decision against anyone else.

“I will not comment on any other clubs.”

  • Tuchel answers German question

In the one German question that got by the moderator, Thomas Tuchel was asked about how he will win over any grumbling England supporters that wanted a homegrown coach.

He said: Everyone has their opinion and I can understand when someone says they would fancy an English coach more for the English team.

“I can understand it, but I think we deserve a fair chance. We deserve it for having a good record, for never being shy of how much we love living here and working with Premier League players.

“Maybe this counts a little bit for a British edge on my German passport, so we will try to convince [the fans] by results and how we play.”

  • Unusual press conference moment

During his introductory press conference, Thomas Tuchel was asked a question in German!

  • Bullingham on recruitment process

FA CEO Mark Bullingham rather evaded the question when asked if England were turned down by any candidates before landing on Thomas Tuchel.

  • Tuchel ‘did not consult Kane’

The incoming England boss has revealed that he did not consult anyone before taking the job – even his former Bayern Munich star Harry Kane.

“I never normally do this because I want my own feeling.”

  • Tuchel on Kane captaincy

The former Bayern Munich boss has refused to confirm that Harry Kane will remain his England captain.

Asked about Kane, Tuchel admitted that he “fought” to bring him to Bayern, and that he is a “legend” in the making for the Three Lions.

But he stopped short of saying that the striker will remain his skipper come March.

He said: “Too early to answer these questions but you know how I think of Harry and how I fought to bring him to Bayern Munich.

“He is on his way to be a legend but it is important to have respect to Lee (Carsley) and not interfere next month.”

  • Tuchel on contract length

The German has confirmed that he has signed an 18-month contract.

He said: “It is for 18 months and then we agreed to sit together and let’s see.

“I have good experience with 18 months, unfortunately!

“It was important for me to have a framework. We are building up to the World Cup.”

  • Tuchel on making England ‘winners’

Thomas Tuchel has been asked about how he can turn England into “trophy winners”.

He said of his side’s top-end talent: “They are there, we are there. The players proved that they are there. The consistency of reaching quarter-finals and semi-finals and finals is impressive.

“We have players that compete in the strongest league in the world day-in, day-out. We have the ingredients and we fully trust that this is the moment to install patterns and principles that can help to push the team over the line.

“We will need luck not to have injuries and to get little decisions in the game, but we feel confident to add something from our experience in club football that will maybe help.

“We have to live up to these standards. We need to show it in qualification and build an atmosphere with the country. Then special things can happen.”

Tuchel said: ” I understood from Mark it is a personal decision if you sing it. Some managers did it and others did not.”

He then went on to add: “I have not made my decision.

“Your anthem is very moving, I experienced it several times at Wembley and in Cup finals.

“Whatever decision I make, I will always show my respect to my new role, the country and a moving anthem.

“As it is a new subject, I will take a little bit of time.”
