But he skipped attending the Theatre of Dreams for the visit of arch-rivals Liverpool.

It wasn’t because he expected a dodgy result for the home side.

No, he had a very good reason for swapping the Premier League clash for a lower league tussle.

Fergie was seen at Wembley Stadium at the EFL Trophy final in London on Sunday.

He was taking in Peterborough United’s clash with Wycombe Wanderers.

In his first spell he managed to achieve back to back promotions – getting his side from League Two to the Championship.

His second spell fell just short – managing to make the playoffs in 2011.

Inside Sir Alex Ferguson’s Biggest Bust-Ups

While in his third spell, Ferguson added the Football League Trophy to his CV in 2014.

In 2021, Ferguson successfully guided Peterborough to the Championship again.

Last year, he returned to guide the club to playoff finish, only to lose in the final in heartbreaking fashion on penalties.

And it was joy all round for the Fergusons as Peterborough clinched an injury-time winner to take home the trophy.

Harrison Burrows scored in the 85th minute to break the deadlock for Posh before Wycombe’s Dale Taylor scored an 89th-minute equaliser.

Burrows then scored an incredible freak winner as the wind carried his cross beyond the keeper and into the top corner.

With Man Utd battling to a 2-2 draw against Liverpool, he may have been gutted to have missed his old side in action.
