Hoddle said ‘I never want to be put in that position again’ after ‘awkward’ call from Man Utd icon Sir Alex Ferguson

GARY NEVILLE has lifted the lid on an “awkward” phone call between Glenn Hoddle and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Hoddle had been England manager at the time, with Neville recalling an international break back in 1997.

The full-back had picked up an injury with the Three Lions, with United wanting him to return to the club for treatment.

However, Neville told the Stick to Football podcast that Hoddle refused, prompting Ferguson to get in contact.

He explained: “The boss (Ferguson) rang him and Glenn said: ‘you’re going back, but I never want to be put in that position again.’ It was awkward.”

Neville added: “You’re hoping the physio will sort it out, the manager will sort it out.

“But Glenn was a bit spiky whereas Kevin (Keegan) was a lot more, he’d have a conversation, a bit more mature.”

Hoddle served as England boss between 1996 and 1999, guiding his side to the last 16 of the 1998 World Cup in France.

He handed Neville 17 of his 85 international caps before being replaced in the dugout by Kevin Keegan during Euro 2000 qualifying.

Meanwhile, Neville also said Roy Keane would be worth £100million in today’s transfer market, a claim his former team-mate agreed with.

Keane and Neville played together 321 times for United, winning seven league titles and the Champions League with the Red Devils.
