And Southgate also explained why Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden are featuring BEHIND main striker Harry Kane, rather than alongside him.

But he sprang a surprise by starting Saka on the right of a four-man midfield, with Kieran Trippier on the left.

Foden himself discussed his new role next to Jude Bellingham – in front of that four.

Ahead of his 100th game in charge, Southgate hailed Aston Villa star Konsa’s “pace” .

And he hinted England’s latest tactics are partly aimed at countering Swiss tactics.

Explaining Konsa’s selection, Southgate told the BBC: “We’ve tracked the players all season, he’s performed consistently well.

“He did really well when he came into the team against Brazil and Belgium.

“He’a got pace and he’s had a fantastic season with Aston Villa. It’s a great opportunity for him.”

And of his new formation, Southgate added: “We’re always trying to get the best out of everybody.

“And I think generally speaking over 99 games we’ve done that.

“So today is a brilliant opportunity to get to the semi-final – against a team that are playing well and full of confidence.

“We can’t be giving them the game they want. So we must be up to that challenge.
