Pochettino is under mounting pressure after his side dropped to 11th in the Premier League following back-to-back defeats.

Speaking after the match, he explained: “I want to apologise to the fans.

“The fans were hurting today because they were supporting the team. It was tough, tough afternoon for everyone. The players, for us, the fans.

“I feel sorry because I think we started the game well, scoring the goal and then we made some mistakes that you cannot afford in the Premier League and gave the option to the opponent to score. We concede two own goals.

“I’m very disappointed in the way that we didn’t manage the nerves and the stress of the game. We concede the first goal and that always makes it difficult because the expectation is massive.

“All the people believe that we need to be in a different position and that does not make it easy for the players to perform in the way that we expect.”

Chelsea were unable to overcome a hostile atmosphere at Stamford Bridge despite taking the lead through Cole Palmer.

A hat-trick from Matheus Cunha and Axel Disasi’s own goal saw the visitors recover to take a 4-1 lead before Thiago Silva’s late strike.

The defender’s wife even appeared to call for Pochettino to be sacked after the match.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Belle Silva said: “It’s time to change. If you wait any longer it will be too late.”

Sunday’s loss sees Chelsea slip to 11th, with Wolves leapfrogging them in the table.

The Blues are now 15 points adrift of the top four, having also lost 4-1 to Liverpool on Wednesday.
