Hungary head coach Marco Rossi said post-match: “Barnabas Varga’s life is not in danger.
“He will undergo an operation after fracture in his face and he won’t be available for the rest of Euro 2024.”

Sallai recalls horror incident
Hungary’s man of the match Roland Sallai recalled the ‘terrible moment’ suffered by teammate Barnabas Varga.
“It was terrible, it was a terrible moment,” he said.
“Fortunately he’s in a much better condition, he’s going to have to go for a minor operation probably, but he’s in a much better condition.
“We cross our fingers that he can return quickly.”
BBC apologise
THE BBC apologised for showing a replay of Barnabas Varga’s shocking injury during Scotland’s defeat to Hungary.
The striker was rushed to hospital following a clash with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
He received lengthy medical treatment on the pitch as the BBC attempted to avoid showing a replay of the incident.
Uefa decided to show a replay of the incident so the BBC cut away to a wide angle out of respect for the stricken player.
BBC presenter Gabby Logan explained Uefa broke their own protocol by showing the replay.
She said live on air: “We were as shocked as you when they replayed that incident.
“There are protocols around this kind of thing after Christian Eriksen three years ago and we were very surprised that Uefa decided to show that replay, which is why we cut away immediately to a wide angle as soon as we could.”
United in support
Hungary’s players were in celebratory mood after their win against Scotland.
However, they had Barnabas Varga on their minds, following his horror injury.
They paraded his shirt as a tribute at the final whistle.
Varga injury update
According to Fabrizio Romano, Varga’s will miss the rest of Euro 2024.
However, the positive news is that his coach Marco Rossi confirmed his life is not in danger.
Romano tweeted: “Hungary head coach Marco Rossi: “Barnabás Varga’s life is not in danger”. “He will undergo an operation after fracture in his face and he won’t be available for the rest of Euro 2024”.
Club release Varga update
Barnabas Varga’s domestic club, Hungarian giants Ferencvaros, have taken to Twitter to inform followers that the striker is stable in a Stuttgart hospital.
Meanwhile, Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai was pictured at full time wearing Vargas’ shirt as a tribute to their injured teammate.
Match stats from Stuttgart Arena
Hungary’s goal scored by Kevin Csoboth in the 100th minute of the match was the latest ever in normal time of a European Championship match (timed at 99 minutes and 32 seconds).
The Scots had just 17 shots in total at Euro 2024. Since the group stage was introduced in 1980, that is the joint-fewest by a nation in the groups along with Northern Ireland at Euro 2016.
Csoboth leads tribute to Varga
The BBC have just announced that a statement from the Hungarian camp reveals that Barnabas Varga is conscious and stable in a Stuttgart hospital.
The forward was stretchered off in the second half amid worrying scenes following a collision inside the Scotland penalty area.
The Hungarian players created a human shield around the stricken striker at the time, and were then quick to pay tribute to him following Kevin Csoboth’s goal deep into stoppage time.
Beaten Scots crash out
Stoppage time goals in both games this evening mean that Germany win Group A and Scotland crash out by finishing bottom.
Unbeaten Switzerland follow the Germans through in second place with five points while Hungary now face a nervous wait to find out if three points will be enough for them to progress in third place.
- Scotland 0-1 Hungary
- Switzerland 1-1 Germany
Full time – Scotland 0-1 Hungary
Scotland are beaten. Scotland are out. Scotland are heartbroken.
The final whistle is blown on Scotland’s summer, and they have come up short.
Beaten agonisingly in the final seconds, Steve Clarke’s side have finished bottom of Group A behind Germany, Switzerland and tonight’s victors Hungary.
It could have all been so different if Stuart Armstrong had been awarded a second half penalty, but in the end the toothless Scots were undone by devastating counter-attack.
Scotland 0-1 Hungary
90+10. Scotland lose it right at the death!
With the seconds running down, the Scots win a corner and know it is their final chance.
The delivery from the left falls inside the area at the feet of Callum McGregor, who winds up for a shot that is magnificently blocked.
And then suddenly Hungary are away.
A brilliant ball right by Dominik Szoboszlai to Rollan Sallia – who looks offside – is taken to the byline, and then pulled back beautifully for substitute Kevin Csoboth to stroke home.
Wild celebrations at one end. Hearbreak and despair at the other.
Scotland heartbreak!
Scotland 0-0 Hungary
90+8. Hanley with the chance to win it! Saved by Gulacsi!
Was that the moment? That was the moment!
Scotland 0-0 Hungary
90+6. McTominay slides a Morgan cross wide at the near post.
It’s probably Scotland’s best move of the night, but wouldn’t have counted as Morgan had set off too early down at the right.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary
90+4. McGregor has a worthy crack at goal from outside the box, but sees it crash into a defender.
Meanwhile, Germany have netted a late equaliser against Switzerland in Frankfurt.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary
90+2. Hungary are knocking on the door!
In the first couple of minutes of stoppage time, a Szoboszlai shot at the near post is saved by Gunn, Schafer heads wide, and then Csoboth pulls an effort on the break on to the far post.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary
90. The board goes up to signal ten minutes of stoppage time.
There is still time. There is still hope.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary – Scotland substitution
88. Lawrence Shankland has really added something to the Scotland attack since his introduction.
Meanwhile, Scotland captain Andy Robertson is off, and on comes Lewis Morgan as an extra forward.
The Red Bulls ace wasn’t even in the squad until a fortnight ago.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary – Hungary double substitution
86. Zsolt Nagy and Kevin Csoboth are on to strengthen the Hungary cause; the duo replace Milos Kerkez and Bendeguz Bolla.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary
85. Five minutes to go. Five minutes plus a substantial amount of injury time, I’d imagine.
And forget the possibilities of two points being enough to get through, both teams need to win here.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary – Scotland double substution
83. Steve Clarke throws caution to the wind – as much as Steve Clarke can throw caution to the wind.
The Scotland head coach throws on Kenny McLean and Ryan Christie for Anthony Ralston and Billy Gilmour,
It looks as though the Scots have gone to a back four.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary
81. Scotland players, staff and fans cannot believe they didn’t get that penalty decision moments ago.
It’s not even clear if VAR had a second look at it.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary
79. Stuart Armstrong goes down in the box after a tangle with Willi Orban!
That’s a penalty! Surely! The referee says no!
It was a lovely run through from the former Southampton midfielder, who was slightly held up before being wrestled and dragged to the floor by his marker.
Armstrong sits up and looks towards Facundo Tello, but the referee shakes his head and crosses his arms. Will VAR look into it?!
Scotland 0-0 Hungary
77. Scotland win their first corner of the night!
Unfortunately, McTominay’s delivery from the right is poor and easily dealt with.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary – Scotland double substitution
76. John McGinn is a surprise departure as Steve Clarke shakes things up for the final quarter of an hour.
Stuart Armstrong is on in his place, and also on is Lawrence Shankland. The free-scoring strike replaces Che Adams.
Scotland 0-0 Hungary – Hungary double substitution
74. Burly striker Martin Adam is on for the injured Varga, and also on Attila Szalai for Marton Dudai.
