Amanda Staveley ‘in talks to buy stake in Newcastle’s Premier League rivals valued at £2.9BILLION days after Toon exit’


FORMER Newcastle chief Amanda Staveley is reportedly in talks to invest in one of their biggest rivals.

The businesswoman and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi played an influential role in the Saudi Arabia-led takeover in 2021.

But SunSport exclusively revealed that she was stepping down last week

According to Bloomberg, Staveley is determined to buy stakes in another Premier League club.

She has apparently already held talks over investing in Tottenham after raising £500million through her investment fund PCP Capital Partners.

Owner Daniel Levy is believed to be open to selling part of the club.

He told Bloomberg News last year: “I’ve got no real interest to leave Tottenham, but I have a duty to consider anything that anyone may want to propose.”

Staveley was the public face of the Saudi consortium who bought Newcastle.

She is popular with the fans at Newcastle as she often spent time meeting and drinking with them, along with husband Ghodoussi.

The 51-year-old also represented Toon at Premier League meetings where she was forceful presence, with Newcastle often opposing rule changes introduced by the league such as including restrictions on sponsorship deals.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund paid £300m for 80 per cent of Newcastle in 2021 in a surprise move that has transformed its fortunes and fundamentally changed the Premier League.

Staveley received a stake in the club as payment for her involvement in the deal.

She claimed in March that former boss Steve Bruce “didn’t even want to come to work” when she bought the Magpies.

Bruce left after just one game following the takeover with an £8m payout before Eddie Howe arrived.

Speaking at the Bloomberg Power Players’ Summit in Jeddah, Staveley was speaking about the state of the club when she arrived.

She said: “We had few commercial revenues, we had a team that was ageing, a fan base that was angry, and a coach who basically didn’t even want to come to work.”

But Staveley backtracked on Instagram, saying: “I would like to clarify a comment I made during a recent speaking engagement.

“While commenting on Newcastle United at the time of the club’s change in ownership I suggested the club had a coach who did not want to come to work.
