Weghorst touched the Liverpool badge before kick-off as he headed out of the tunnel – a tradition done by home players.

The result that followed didn’t help Weghorst’s case as United held seven away at their rivals.

And he has faced calls to be sacked having only netted one goal in 14 appearances.

Meanwhile, fellow under-fire United star, Bruno Fernandes, caught a ride from midfielder Fred in his plush Bentley.

Fernandes has received criticism for his captains performance in the loss to Liverpool.

Despite this, manager Erik ten Hag has rallied behind his star midfielder.

When asked if Fernandes will stay as captain, Ten Hag said: “Yes, definitely. I think he’s playing a brilliant season, he’s played an important role in the position that we are.

“He’s giving energy to the team, running a lot with intensity, in the right way.

“He’s pointing and coaching players, he’s an inspiration for the whole team. No one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes.

“I’m really happy to have Bruno Fernandes in my team and I’m happy with him as our captain with Harry not on the pitch.”

United are back in action on Thursday in the Europa League against Real Betis.
