Bellegarde protested his innocence to referee Josh Smith after the incident.

But the decision was upheld following a VAR check.

The French youth international was making just his second appearance for Wolves.

He joined Gary O’Neil’s side in a £12.8million deal from Strasbourg on transfer deadline day.

Bellegarde made his debut in Wolves’ 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool last week.

His second appearance lasted just 39 minutes before being sent for an early bath.

Luton went into the match hunting their first Premier League win of the season.

Wolves, meanwhile, have triumphed just once in the Prem this term – 1-0 at Everton last month.

Fans online were unhappy with Lockyer, claiming he put Bellegarde in a “leg lock” before making the most of the subsequent kick out.

One wrote: “Absolutely pathetic. The Luton player put him in a leg lock and didn’t allow him to get up what do you expect him to do???”

While a second fumed: “What has happened to the sport I love? You put a dude in a leg lock then simulate pain when he slightly nudges you off?”

Another blasted: “Absolute cheat and even worse player.”

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Luton found themselves 1-0 down just five minutes after the break… with Lockyer at fault.

The central defender was burned for pace by Pedro Neto, who breezed by him before smacking the ball into the net.

Carlton Morris levelled for the home side from the penalty spot on 65 minutes.

The match finished 1-1, with Luton earning their first Prem point.
