Who is England Under-20 manager Ian Foster?


ENGLAND travel to Argentina in search of more World Cup success and Under-20 gaffer Ian Foster will be calling the shots.

Foster is no stranger to lifting titles having guided the U19’s side to a European Championship triumph in 2021.

However, the Englishman will want to double up on his winnings by helping the U20 put another World Cup in their cabinet.

Who is Ian Foster?

Born on November 11, 1976, Ian Foster was raised in Whiston, Merseyside.

The ex-striker started his footballing career at Liverpool but spent most of his playing days in the lower leagues enjoying success with the likes of Hereford United, Chester City and Kidderminster.

And then in 2009, Foster decided to hang up his boots and go down the managerial route where his first port of call would be assistant manager of League of Ireland Premier Division club Galway United.

By the end of the year, Ian got promoted to manager following Jeff Kenna’s departure, and his hard work earned him a role at Coventry City U18 in 2012.

Foster then made the switch to first-team coach at then League Two Portsmouth in 2015 where he would go on to play an instrumental role in Pompey’s title win the following season.

But that same year saw Foster finally make the breakthrough in taking up a position with the English FA – managing England Men’s U17s, U18s, U19s, Senior Women’s and currently the U20s.

Foster is responsible for a lot of top talent emerging out of the England youth development.

Ian oversaw the development of James Maddison, Callum Wilson, John Fleck and Cyrus Christie as they made their full international honours.

The English gaffer also played a key role in players at the biggest Premier clubs such as Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, Conor Gallagher and Emile Smith Rowe?
