NEWCASTLE have been in sizzling form this season – and they have their home matchday atmosphere to thank for a lot of their success.
One major part of the home match day experience at St James’ Park is the club anthem that is played while the players are walking out onto the pitch.
Magpies fans are on the brink of seeing their club play in the Champions League for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
And they might not have to wait too long to hear the song played on big European nights either.
So what is the song called, and what are its origins?
What is the song called?
The song Newcastle play as the players are walking out onto the pitch is called Going Home (Theme of the Local Hero).
It was originally an instrumental rock song that rose as high at 56 in the UK charts when it was released in 1983.
It was the closing track on the film Local Hero and the album was recorded in New York and in London.
It’s not known when the song was adopted by Newcastle, but the fans absolutely love it.
Mark Knopfler, a musician raised in Newcastle, wrote the melody and he is also a supporter of the Magpies.
