Ahead of his first North London derby, Maddison lifted the lid on the now famous quote.

While speaking to Sky Sports, the 26-year-old was asked whether he would celebrate winning the game with a roast dinner afterwards.

In response, Maddison said: “I thought something like that would come up, taken way out of context by the way.”

Asked about the viral fervour it caused, he added: “The question was about being a showman and I said that’s how I am as a person, like a showman.

“Like if we’re at dinner I like to tell jokes and stuff so it kind of got taken a bit out of context…

“It’s not entirely what I meant, but I enjoyed the memes nonetheless.

“Some of them were absolutely hilarious. My group chat with my friends was just pinging in tweets and TikTok’s of me being the main man at roast dinner.

“It was worth it for the banter. I might have to do a roast dinner celebration the next time I score.”

Maddison has hit the ground running at Spurs, grabbing two goals and two assists from his opening five Premier League games seeing him land the August Player of the Month award.

Under Ange Postecoglou Spurs have managed to replace the creativity of Harry Kane who joined Bayern Munich in the summer thanks in large part to Maddison.

Sunday’s match is set to be an interesting tactical battle between the two sides, with Maddison’s role in game set to be pivotal in its outcome.

But Spurs chairman Daniel Levy jokingly warned Maddison to change his motor, telling fans at a Q&A session: “James needs to learn that he can’t come to the training ground in a red car.

“I’ve told him. He’ll learn.”
