THIS is the shocking moment a women’s team brutally attacked a referee after tensions boiled over following a missed penalty call.

DR Congo side DC Motema Pembe were on the receiving end of a heavy beating by TP Mazembe when the incident happened.

Things got out of hand when the referee failed to award Motema Pembe a penalty while losing 5-1.

Players aggressively chased after the male referee, who desperately ran across the pitch to find safety.

Members of the football team managed to get hold of him and seemingly started beating the official with a combination of kicks and punches.

A boot was thrown and one player even went to pick up what looked like a metal bucket.

One man could also be seen joining in on the savage attack.

Stadium staff attempted to help the referee, who eventually managed to slip down the tunnel.

But he was pursued by Motema Pembe players again.

TP Mazembe players could only watch on as the incident unfolded.

According to GhanaWeb, the Congolese Football Association has suspended the players who were involved in the incident.

An investigation has also been opened into the shocking incident.
