Independiente were awarded a bizarre spot kick during their clash with Colon.

The visitors took the lead through Santiago Pierotti on ten minutes, before Independiente hit back in unusual circumstances.

It all appeared innocuous enough, when Colon prepared to take a goal kick.

Goalkeeper Ignacio Chicco initially placed the ball on the six yard line, when team-mate Paolo Goltz motioned that he should take it.

Chicco passed the ball a yard to his right, with Goltz picking it up to place the ball himself.

Independiente stars started jumping up and down appealing for a penalty, claiming Chicco had taken the kick therefore Goltz had handballed it.

The referee initially waved away the home side’s fierce protestations, motioning for players to stop surrounding him.

But, incredibly, VAR intervened and eventually opted to give a spot kick.

Martin Cauteruccio converted from 12 yards, levelling the game at 1-1.

That wasn’t the end of the drama, with Independiente being awarded another penalty ten minutes from the end of normal time.

This time Matias Daniel Gimenez Rojas was on hand to score, giving Independiente a 2-1 lead.

But Goltz, who was booked, and Co weren’t finished there – with Ramon Abila striking a dramatic 101st minute equaliser to see the match finish 2-2.

Fans online were left baffled by the first penalty incident.

One tweeted a facepalm emoji after seeing the call.

While a second wrote: “Still not sure what was the strangest thing I saw in football yesterday: a goalkeeper scoring directly from his goal kick, or this being given as a penalty.”

A third joked: “Seen them given.”
