Mason Greenwood could make international comeback as coach praises his ‘talent’ – but it won’t be with England

MASON Greenwood could make an international comeback after a coach praised his “talent” – but it won’t be with England.

The ex-Manchester United forward, who scored his first goal for Spanish club Getafe on Sunday, can still swap nations as he only won one cap for the Three Lions in 2020.

And Jamaica’s manager Heimir Hallgrimsson now wants Greenwood to follow in the footsteps of Prem stars Ethan Pinnock, Demarai Gray and Michail Antonio and play for the island nation.

The Reggae Boyz coach said: “We would like to have the best talent on our team.

“If he gets his former fitness and former levels, then for sure he would have that level to help Jamaica.”

His backing comes after Greenwood, who is of Jamaican descent, was suspended by Man United in January 2022.

The dad-of-one was charged with attempted rape and assault in October last year, but the charges were later dropped in February.

England’s Crown Prosecution Service said key witnesses had withdrawn and new material had come to light, removing a “realistic prospect of conviction”.

The 22-year-old arrived at Getafe on deadline day this summer and made his debut on September 17, with his coach Jose Bordalas pledging to help him “recover his best level”.

He had not kicked a ball since January 22, 2022, when the Red Devils took on West Ham.

His last goal came three days earlier, in United’s 3-1 win over Brentford.

He scored his first goal for Getafe on Sunday after his loan move from United, his first strike for nearly two years.

Greenwood scored to send Getafe 2-1 up at Celta Vigo in La Liga, drilling home from Borja Mayoral’s cut-back in his fifth appearance for the club.

The game ended up 2-2 and puts Getafe 11th in the LaLiga table.

Greenwood, who made his United debut aged 17 and played 129 times for the club, has a contract at Old Trafford until 2025.
