The final nail in the coffin for Schreuder was a draw with FC Volendam.

Ajax had a staggering 31 shots in the match to Volendam’s two, yet only drew 1-1 with the relegation battlers after Mohammed Kudus scored a late equaliser.

In a statement, Ajax said: “Ajax has removed Alfred Schreuder from active duty with immediate effect.

“The manager’s contract ran till June 30, 2024, but has been terminated.

“The disappointing results and lack of development within the team are the main reason for this decision. The management of the club is no longer confident about their agreement.”

Under current Manchester United boss Ten Hag, Ajax won the last three full Eredivisie league campaigns – with one campaign in the middle voided due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

On top of their league struggles, which see them sitting down in fifth, Ajax failed to progress from their Champions League group, though did earn a Europa League play-off spot against Union Berlin by coming third.

Following his Ajax departure, Ten Hag has set about the mammoth task of turning around the fortunes of the Red Devils.

After a poor start to the season, United have grown far stronger as the season has gone on.

A spot in the Carabao Cup final has been all but guaranteed after a 3-0 win in the first leg of the semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

United are also in the top four, though dropping five points in the last two games has seen Tottenham creep back up to be within three points of them.

And by Ten Hag’s own admission, there remains a lot to improve on, which may start with United facing Reading in the FA Cup fifth round tomorrow.
