Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag raging at ‘annoying’ decision that cost his side in last-gasp defeat to Brighton

ERIK TEN HAG has raging after his side’s defeat to Brighton after losing the match late on.

Referee Andre Marriner was on the verge of blowing for full-time before he was advised by VAR to review a possible handball by Luke Shaw.

The ref judged the defender to have committed a handball in the box and Alexis Mac Allister converted the resulting penalty, much to the annoyance of Ten Hag.

Speaking after the game, the United boss said: “Every defeat is a disappointment but in the end when you lose in the last second, that is of course annoying.

“And I think the first minute sums everything up. We create a good chance, we were not clinical enough, then in the attack after we concede a big chance by a giveaway from us, the ball on the head for David.

“And in the end, we also gave away the goal and that’s annoying because if you can’t win because you don’t finish your opportunities then don’t lose.

“The annoying thing is that the free-kick before (the corner) is never a free-kick and I have seen really bad tackles today, sometimes without whistles as well.

“Every attack you make, they kick you and then from a fair block it’s a free-kick and it’s a corner and then it’s a disappointing handball in the dying seconds and you can’t react any more.

“It’s not about me to give a judgement about the ref. We lost this game, we make a mistake in the end and we didn’t take our chances but of course there are some disappointments.”

Shaw also spoke after the match and admitted his mistake for Brighton’s winner.

He apologised saying: “It hurts a lot, last minute, last action.

“I got a little nudge but my hand shouldn’t be there and I own up to it.

“Take it on the chin, cost us the game, it’s tough I can’t even explain why my hand’s up there, I got a nudge, maybe that helps but still it shouldn’t be there.

“Even before the corner the free-kick that was given away was never a foul. I’m not looking for excuses for what I did but there’s no way that should have been given a foul.

“For me that corner shouldn’t have happened, I can’t change that, not accusing the ref of anything but for me it wasn’t a foul but hands up, silly mistake. But it cost us a point at the end.”
