Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso ‘a shock contender for Chelsea job’ less than 12 months into managerial career

XABI ALONSO is reportedly a contender to take up the manager position at Chelsea.

The Liverpool legend is new to the managerial world, having only taken up the hot seat at Bayer Leverkusen earlier this season.

Alonso, 41, is said to have gained “admiration” from Chelsea, according to The Guardian.

The Spaniard has worked wonders at Leverkusen since he took over in October.

The Bundesliga side was struggling at the bottom of the table, but under Alonso’s guidance, they have climbed up the league to 7th.

There appears to be no slowing down either, with the Die Werkself winning the last four games.

The report suggests that despite this, he is unlikely to be offered the chance to replace Graham Potter, 47, at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are believed to be more interested in appointing a more experienced manager.

The club has been linked with Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique.

The former Spain manager is one of the favourites to take over after Chelsea made initial contact earlier this week.

Enrique has reportedly flown to London for talks with the Blues.

While Nagelsmann is also wanted by Premier League rivals Tottenham and Ligue 1 against PSG.

The French side are believed to have made contact with the German with a view to replacing current boss Christophe Galtier.
