The Independant are reporting that the club want to bring in an experienced interim to guide the them to Premier League safety.

And Leicester chiefs have selected O’Neill and Rafael Benitez as potential options.

The hierarchy supposedly wanted to bring in the just sacked Chelsea boss Graham Potter, but he has rejected a move to the club.

Instead, they could try to bring O’Neill, 71, back to Leicester.

The Northern Irishman managed them between 1995 and 2000, helping guide the team to promotion to the Premier League and then two League Cup victories.

O’Neill went on to manage Celtic, Aston Villa, Sunderland and the Ireland national side before stepping away from management in 2019 following a spell at Nottingham Forest.

Some of Rodgers’ assistants Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler are currently in charge of the team and got off to a bad start, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa last night.

After the defeat, Sadler refused to give a time frame on how long he could take caretaker charge, saying: “The club have asked me to take the game tonight, that’s what I have done, I know nothing more than that at this stage.”
