I’m a former Man Utd star who wowed Louis van Gaal as a youngster – now I’m struggling for game time in Poland

JUST because you’ve left a Champions League winning manager impressed, doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to be a success.

Louis van Gaal was wowed by Cameron Borthwick-Jackson during his time at Manchester United, but the Englishman’s career has failed to kick on since.

Borthwick-Jackson came through the academy ranks at Man Utd and made 14 appearances under Van Gaal during the 2015/16 season.

The Dutch gaffer was forced to throw the then 18-year-old into the mix after an injury crisis, but was left pleasantly surprised by his ability to slot straight into the first team.

Speaking in 2015, Van Gaal said: “I have seen him once or twice and I have been impressed by him.

“I knew that Marouane Fellaini was injured, so I talked with Warren Joyce [Man Utd U21 coach] and asked what he had for me.

“I’m always talking with him or Paul McGuinness [Man Utd U18 coach], and he said at the moment the left full-back is in good shape.

“I needed a left full-back because Marcos Rojo had played a few games in a row, so I have to take into account that it might be too much.

“I put Cameron in the line-up without any fear, and I have to say he did very well.”

But despite the experienced manager’s glowing review of the full-back things didn’t progress as expected and Borthwick-Jackson’s career with the Red Devils never progressed.

Instead he we sent on a flurry of unsuccessful loans to Wolves, Leeds Scunthorpe and Tranmere.

He then impressed at Oldham Athletic in 2020 and made a permanent move to join the Latics.

Some 41 appearances later and he made a move to Burton Albion where he spent two seasons in League One, but was ultimately released this summer.

And now he’s found a new home away from English football with Polish first division side Slask Wroclaw.

But things aren’t quite going to plan for Borthwick-Jackson in the Polish league so far this term.

The 26-year-old has played just ONE MINUTE of league football after coming on as a late substitute during Slask Wroclaw’s 1-1 draw with Gornik Zabrze.
