Harry Kane’s trophy hopes take another huge dent as Bayern Munich thumped 5-1 to lose more ground on Bundesliga leaders

HARRY KANE warmed up for a return to England by suffering his first competitive defeat since joining Bayern Munich.

The England captain heads to Manchester United on Tuesday with the chance to dump them out of the Champions League in the final Group A game.

But preparations to administer the last rites at Old Trafford could not have gone worse for Bayern with a humiliating rout against a team which had lost its four previous matches.

And even worse for Kane, the man who has not stopped scoring since he quit Tottenham for Germany in the summer, he barely got a sniff at goal.

He had just one chance, in the first half when a shot from a corner was deflected over the bar from three yards out on a miserable afternoon for the defending Bundesliga champions.

Kane also had his head in his hands in frustration when he teed up a great chance for team-mate Eric Choupo-Moting in the second half, only for the one-time Stoke forward to fluff a golden chance to get Bayern back into the game.

Kane, who cost £82million, experienced defeat on his debut in the German Super Cup – their equivalent of our Community Shield – as a second half sub.

But that was way back in August. Since then it has been easy street with 22 goals for his new club, some of which have been spectacular efforts.

Bayern also secured early qualification for the Champions League knockout stage while Manchester United look to be heading out.

Confidence needs to be rebuilt quickly as history repeated itself because Frankfurt were the last side to stick five past Bayern in the league – back in November 2019.

Defeat also means Bayern blew the chance to regain top spot in the table from Bayer Leverkusen.

Munich went behind in the 12th minute through Omar Marmoush. Frankfurt made it two on 31 minutes when Junior Dina Ebimbe cashed in on calamitous defending.

Hugo Larrson added a third nine minutes before half time as the biggest club in Germany, led by former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, was swept away.

Joshua Kimmich gave Kane’s team faint hope with a classy 25-yard strike just before the break but Ebimbe pounced on the break after more dreadful defending to make it 4-1.

And to add insult to injury VAR intervened to make it total embarrassment after Ansgar Knauff’s shot was initially judged offside.
