The FA are claimed to be compiling a list of potential candidates to replace Southgate, when he eventually leaves his post.

Newcastle boss Howe is believed to be among the strongest contenders.

But according to the Telegraph, Howe will rule himself out of the running, should the position become available.

The 45-year-old does not want to become an international boss at this stage of his career.

Instead he hopes to be at Newcastle for the long-term.

Some might expect the manager’s hotseat at St James’ Park to be a volatile one, given their ambitious ownership.

But it’s claimed that Howe will not be under pressure if his side fail to finish in the top four this season.

With Howe not keen, two other obvious English candidates are believed to be in the running.

Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter has been mentioned, although is likely to take a job at another club rather than wait for the Three Lions.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper has also been named as a contender.

Southgate, 53, will lead the Three Lions in Germany next summer after England sealed Euro 2024 qualification with a 3-1 win over Italy on Tuesday night.

It will be his fourth tournament at the helm, having taken charge of two World Cups and Euro 2020.
