In a repeat of last season’s final, the two sides met at Old Trafford in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

However, unlike back in February, it was Newcastle who took the lead on Wednesday night.

Two goals in eight minutes from Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall put the visitors into a comfortable lead at Old Trafford.

After the goals, Sky Sports’ cameras quickly panned to the United bench to get the players’ reaction.

United’s first half struggles came after fans had celebrated Erik ten Hag’s decision to drop Fernandes from the starting line-up.

Both the Portugal international and Marcus Rashford were dropped to the bench for Wednesday’s match.

Ten Hag made seven changes following the loss to Manchester City at the weekend.

One fan had celebrated on X, formerly Twitter, by writing: “No Bruno Rashford lets goooo.”

The pair have come under fire amid the Red Devils’ poor form in recent weeks.
