KE Kumar dead at 59: Driver dies in horror crash during MRF Indian National Car Racing Championship


INDIAN racing driver KE Kumar has died at the age of 59 following a horror crash in India.

Kumar was competing in a saloon race during Round 2 of the 2022 MRF Indian National Car Racing Championship on Sunday.

The crash is being investigated by the governing body of Indian motorsport

But it ended in tragic circumstances as he crashed while going around the Madras International Circuit in Chennai.

Footage showed the car veering off the track before it collided with the front of another car, sending it into the trees and fence.

The race was immediately red flagged and Kumar was rushed to hospital following an examination at the track’s medical centre.

Tragically, he later passed away as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

The races scheduled for the rest of the day were cancelled.

The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India have launched an investigation into the matter.

According to NDTV, police have “registered a case of causing death due to negligence”.

And Vicky Chandhok, vice-president of the Madras International Circuit, was devastated following the fatal crash.

He said: “It is a most unfortunate incident.

“Kumar was an experienced racer. I have known him for several decades as a friend and competitor.

“The MMSC and entire racing fraternity mourn his passing away and convey heartfelt condolences to his family.”
