Carl Froch slams Eddie Hearn after talking up Jake Paul vs Wayne Rooney as ex-champ fears for ‘the state of boxing’

CARL FROCH fears for “the state of boxing” after his former promoter pitched the idea of Jake Paul fighting Wayne Rooney.

Froch was under Eddie Hearn’s banner for the final stages of his career, where he reigned as super-middleweight champion.

He retired in 2014 after knocking out rival George Groves in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.

Froch now works as a pundit and even runs his own YouTube channel, often giving scathing opinions on YouTuber-turned boxer Paul.

But this time it was his ex-promoter Hearn who faced the wrath of the retired British boxing legend.

It came after he teased the idea of Paul fighting Manchester United legend and now Birmingham manager Rooney at Old Trafford.

Froch, 46, told Casino Alpha: “I don’t know why Eddie Hearn is talking about Jake Paul versus Wayne Rooney, Rooney’s a football manager.

“I don’t like the way some boxing promoters are going down the route of crossover fights because a former football player versus a YouTuber is a load of rubbish and I don’t get it.

“I don’t get why a proper promoter is talking up a match between Wayne Rooney and Jake Paul.

“But does that tell us something about the state of boxing at the minute? Would Wayne Rooney v Jake Paul be the biggest fight that Eddie Hearn can make at the minute?”

Paul, 26, is 7-1 as a boxer with his only defeat coming via split-decision in February against rival Tommy Fury, 24, in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile Rooney, 38, did box as an amateur in his school years but he retired from football in 2021 to move into coaching.

Although Hearn revealed the ex-England captain still fancies his chances in the boxing ring.

He told Rio Ferdinand: “I’ve actually spoke to Wayne a few times about the Jake Paul fight.

“Normally, if he has a couple of glasses of red he’ll fire in a message to me at night going, ‘Listen, I wanna fight that geezer.’

“Wayne can fight, he had a couple of amateur fights – but him against Jake Paul at Old Trafford, that’s actually a makeable fight.”
