THE Champions League final is the most prestigious one-off football match in European club football, if not the world.
And hosting the final has become a badge of honour for many cities, with the final giving the host city a huge level of international exposure.
In the UK alone, Wembley, Cardiff, Manchester and Glasgow have hosted the Champions League final in recent years.
But this year’s showpiece event could be under threat because of Russia’s decision to send troops into the Ukraine.

This year’s nominated venue, 64,000-capacity Gazprom Arena was opened in 2017 and was built to host matches at the 2018 World Cup.
Also known as the Kretovsky Stadium, after the island on which the ground resides, the structure cost just under £500million to get finished.
The Gazprom Arena was selected in September 2019 as the host city for the 2022.
But after Russia’s continued agitation, movement of troops into and subsequent invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Uefa decided to convene an emergency meting.
As SunSport reported, Uefa said the decision was “following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours” and that the meeting would “evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions”.
