The country are one of just four countries worldwide who voted against a resolution to Vladimir Putin’s actions – alongside Syria, Eritrea and North Korea.

And now Europe’s governing body for football has acted by announcing all games involving Belarusian clubs and the national team in UEFA competitions will be played at a neutral venue.

An official UEFA statement read: “The UEFA Executive Committee met today and decided that all Belarusian clubs and national teams competing in UEFA competitions will be required to play their home matches at neutral venues with immediate effect.”

Games in which sides from Belarus are the designated ‘home’ team will also not be allowed to have any fans present.

The statement continued: “Furthermore, no spectators shall attend matches in which the teams from Belarus feature as host.”

UEFA finished by saying more ‘extraordinary meetings’ will be held regularly to determine whether any of their rulings need re-evaluating.

They said: “The UEFA Executive Committee will convene further extraordinary meetings, on a regular ongoing basis where required, to reassess the legal and factual situation as it evolves and adopt further decisions as necessary.”

FIFA have already announced Russia have been banned from this year’s World Cup.

All Russian teams have also been suspended from any UEFA competitions.

That has seen Spartak Moscow booted out of the Europa League and their last-sixteen opponents RB Leipzig handed a bye to the next round.

A statement on Monday read: “FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.”

After days of dither and delay, the global game belatedly stood up for the people of Ukraine by imposing sporting sanctions against Russia and Belarus.

Over 2000 innocent civilians have been killed in Ukraine as a result of Putin’s illegal invasion, now into its eighth day.
