Two men arrested as Bolton star Kyle Dempsey and dad left needing medical treatment after ‘unprovoked assault’

TWO men have been arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm after Bolton star Kyle Dempsey and his dad were allegedly the victims of an “unprovoked assault” on a night out.

The midfielder, 26, had played in the Trotters’ 3-1 defeat at former club Carlisle on Saturday afternoon.

Dempsey then hit the town with father Richard – a former rugby league star – in Maryport, Cumbria.

But the pair were on the receiving end of an “unprovoked assault” and were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

A Bolton statement confirmed the shocking news.

“Kyle Dempsey and his father were enjoying an evening out with their family in their home town of Maryport following Saturday’s pre-season friendly against his former club Carlisle United.

“During the course of the evening, they were both subjected to an unprovoked assault which left them requiring medical treatment.

“The Dempsey family will receive the full support of Chairman Sharon Brittan, manager Ian Evatt and the Club while the incident is being investigated by Cumbria Police.”

Cumbria Police told SunSport they had arrested two men on suspicion of assault leading to actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

A statement read: “Police were contacted on 16th July at around 10:40pm to the report of an assault on Senhouse Street, Maryport.

“A man in his 40s suffered facial injuries.

“A 26-year-old man and 49-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage and released on police bail.”

Earlier on Saturday, Dempsey played in Bolton’s 3-1 pre-season defeat at Carlisle.

The midfielder kicked off his career at the Blues and has also played for Gillingham, Huddersfield and Fleetwood.

Saturday’s match was his first return to Brunton Park since leaving seven years ago.

Dempsey joined Bolton in January and played 11 times in the second half of the 2021-22 season, helping them finish ninth in League One.
