Tottenham set to make Cristian Romero’s loan transfer permanent by activating £41m release clause in Atalanta contract

TOTTENHAM are reportedly closing in on a permanent transfer for defender Cristian Romero as they prepare to trigger his £41million release clause.

The 24-year-old Argentine has been on loan at Spurs from Atalanta since the beginning of last season.

He has been mightily impressive for Antonio Conte’s men, playing a major role in their qualification for the Champions League.

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham are now seeking to tie him down to a long-term deal at the club.

A stipulation in the loan was that Spurs would need to trigger his release clause before the end of August.

And they are now poised to do so following a successful summer’s transfer business.

Romero, who already feels like a staple fixture in Conte’s side, would become Tottenham’s seventh signing of the window.

They have already brought in Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence.

Udinese left-back Destiny Udogie, an Italian U21 international, has also been heavily linked with a move to North London.

But four players have been banished from the Spurs squad by Conte following their opening weekend win over Southampton.

Reports claim Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon and Harry Winks have all been axed from first team training.

The foursome have fallen out of favour and been training on their own since the team’s return from pre-season in South Korea.

The four outcasts have been informed that Conte can only work with a certain amount of players and are practicing individually at separate times from the rest of the squad.

The North Londoners are looking for buyers but understand their future may not be resolved until the final week of the summer transfer window, and probably not even before deadline day.
