‘Solution and not problem’ – Arsenal star Mikel Arteta hits back at Aubameyang after free Barcelona transfer exit

MIKEL ARTETA has hit back at Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang by declaring he was ‘the solution’ in their turbulent relationship – NOT ‘the problem’.

Former Arsenal captain Aubameyang, 32, lashed out at Arteta after completing a shock free transfer to Barcelona on deadline day.

Having been frozen out at the Emirates, Aubameyang said at his Nou Camp unveiling: “It was just him [Arteta] and he made that decision.

“He wasn’t happy, I can’t tell you more. He wasn’t very happy, I was very calm.

“My last few months at Arsenal were complicated, that’s football sometimes. For my part, I never wanted to do anything wrong.

“My problem was only with Arteta. I can’t say much more, I wasn’t happy.”

However, the Gunners gaffer has come out swinging in response, laying the blame for the breakdown in their relationship at Aubameyang’s feet.

Arteta declared: “I’m extremely grateful for what Auba has done at the club for his contribution since I have been here and the way I see myself in that relationship is the solution not the problem.

“I have been the solution. One hundred per cent. I can look in the eye of anybody. I do a lot of things wrong for sure but the intention all the time is the best and not for me, it’s for the club and for the team.

“[What Auameyang said] It’s his opinion and that’s his opinion and that’s why he said that and you have to respect that.”

Arsenal now face the tough task of replacing Aubameyang’s goals, with the Gabon ace netting 92 times in just 163 games.

The Gunners missed out on several transfer targets last month including Alexander Isak, Dusan Vlahovic and Alvaro Morata.

But Arteta is confident the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah can step up for the remainder of the season.

He added: “We have two strikers with us and they are both more than capable of scoring goals and they have shown that over the years with us.

“And when we have to replace or improve the squad it can only be with a player that we are certain first of all is the right person and character to join.

“And then a player that with his quality can straight away impact the performance of the team and our capacity to build up a future around him as well.”
