Premier League clubs spent £274m in January – second highest on record – almost more than other top 4 leagues COMBINED

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs effectively declared an end to the Covid cash crisis as they went on a January spending spree.

Transfers by the 20 top-flight teams added up to £274million over the month, the second highest January figure on record.

And that was almost as much as the other four of the Big Five leagues COMBINED, according to Deloitte.

Newcastle’s £85m splurge to bring in Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes led the way as the Toon began to utilise their new Saudi war chest.

It helped take the Prem spend to the figure only exceeded by the £340m outlay in the 2018 window, which featured Virgil van Dijk’s move to Liverpool, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s arrival at Arsenal and Lucas Moura’s capture by Spurs.

By contrast, top tier clubs in Germany, Italy, Spain and France splashed out £315m between them, meaning the Prem spend added up to 48 per cent of the total across the five major leagues.

Even taking sales into account, the Prem net spend of £180m added up to a record for January since the introduction of the winter window in 2003.

It meant the total spend in 2021-22 was around £1.4bn, the third highest in the history of English football.

That was the clearest sign that the Prem is emerging from the Covid crisis.

The return of full houses – Spurs and Manchester United both bank revenues of up to £6m from each home game – and the income from TV broadcast deals have allowed clubs to recover significantly after posting large losses through the pandemic.

But the desperation to stay in English football’s elite saw the bottom five contribute £150m of the tally.

Deloitte’s Dan Jones said: “This transfer window indicates that the financial pressures of Covid on Premier League clubs are easing, with spending firmly back to pre-pandemic levels and remarkably among the highest we’ve ever seen in January.

“The Premier League continues to lead the way globally, retaining its status as the world’s biggest domestic football league in financial terms, once again supported by full stadia and securing strong overseas broadcast deals.

“Other large European leagues are also edging back to higher spending, but it is Premier League clubs that have notched up the largest total spend in this transfer window, spending almost £150m more than Serie A clubs, the closest competitor.”
