The overall victor then guarantees themselves a spot in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

But the three teams involved have released a statement expressing their ‘firm position’ to not play in Russia.

It reads: “Based on the current alarming development in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine including the security situation, the Football Associations of Poland, Sweden and Czech Republic express their firm position that the play-off matches to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar, scheduled for 24 and 29 March 2022 should not be played in the territory of the Russian Federation.

“The signatories to this appeal to not consider travelling to Russia and playing football matches there.

“The military escalation that we are observing entails serious consequences and considerably lower safety for our national football teams and official delegations.

“Therefore, we expect Fifa and Uefa to react immediately and to present alternative solutions regarding places where these approaching play-offs can take place.”

Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine with an overnight barrage of artillery, airstrikes and missiles before tanks rolled into the country before dawn.

The tyrant declared a “special military operation” in Ukraine with a dawn raid after months of amassing his forces on the border and brazenly lying to the world about his plans to invade.

The world is waking up to what could be the most horrific crisis in Europe since World War Two as Putin seeks to tear down the world order.

Uefa is set to strip St Petersburg’s Gazprom Arena of the Champions League final at an emergency meeting on Friday.

Russian president Vladimir Putin is showing no let-up on his Ukraine attack

European football’s governing body confirmed President Aleksander Ceferin had summoned an ‘extraordinary meeting’ of his ruling executive committee at 9am tomorrow.

Uefa said the decision was ‘following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours’ and that the meeting would ‘evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions’.

Wembley is ready to host the final instead, while West Ham and Tottenham have also emerged as potential options.
