Cech has joined the Chieftains on a one-year deal and his signing was announced ahead of the game against Oxford City Stars on Sunday.

The former goalkeeper, 40, made 20 appearances for Phoenix between 2019-2022 and helped them win the treble last year.

That included the NIHL Division Two South title, with Cech now playing in the tier above.

It means the ex-Czech Republic international will goaltend in the NIHL Division One South for the first time in his career.

Chieftains fans were excited by the capture and for good reason, as Cech ended last season with a league-best goals-against average of 1.73.

One supporter reacted to the news saying: “Incredible signing.”

Another added: “Massive signing!! Big boots to fill but I have faith in the four-time Premier League and Champions League winner!”

And a third said: “Omg Petr Cech has signed!”

Upon signing for the club Cech said: “I’m excited for a new challenge with the Chieftains and I’m looking forward to helping the team reach their targets for the season.”

Cech’s move comes weeks after he left his role as technical director at Chelsea following Todd Boehly’s takeover.

The former Blues player returned to the club in an advisory capacity in 2019 but departed over the summer.
