And Red Devils fans are now waiting with bated breath to see if a switch goes through in the coming months.

The hope is that a positive change at the top will filter down to the team, who have been dreadful under new boss Erik ten Hag.

United lost both of their Premier League openers against Brighton and Brentford.

But one of their most pressing concerns remains the future of Ronaldo.

The Old Trafford legend has made it clear he wants to quit before deadline day, despite receiving no offers from major clubs.

Ronnie looked out of sorts in United’s 4-0 hammering at Brenford on Saturday.

And while the club anticipates a possible change in owner, there is still work to be done on the field.

United’s next match is a seemingly-impossible clash against top rival Liverpool on Monday.

And club icon Neville has now begged Ronaldo to stop “throwing his arms around” by helping United out as much as possible.

Neville reckons the Portuguese ace has nothing to lose, and stepping up should be his responsibility as the team’s best player.

Neville told Diary of a CEO podcast: “That’s where I am a little bit critical about Cristiano. 

“You’re the man, you’re the star. You’re the best player in the world. Come on. 

“Now’s not the time to be throwing your arms around. Now’s not the time to be walking off the pitch.

“Now’s the time to be leading those people, but he wants to leave. And that might happen and who can blame him?

“He wants to finish his career at a club that’s achieving great things. But I do think he’s the only player in that dressing room that could lead them. 

“He’s the only one with the in-built resilience and mental strength.”
