Man Utd step up transfer chase for Benfica keeper Odysseas Vlachodimos casting doubt on David de Gea’s future

MANCHESTER UNITED are still interested in signing Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, according to reports.

The Greek stopper was on their radar during the summer as they looked to replace Nottingham Forest-bound Dean Henderson.

United instead opted to sign Martin Dubravka from Newcastle as back up to current No1 David de Gea.

According to Greek outlet Sportime, however, the Red Devils’ interest in Vlachodimos has intensified since the summer.

They add that United have been thoroughly scouting the 28-year-old this season.

Benfica are believed to want around £17.5million for their in-demand goalkeeper.

Sportime claim that Vlachodimos could even be a contender to replace De Gea as first choice – with the Spaniard’s contract set to expire next summer.

In addition to Vlachodimos, they claim that United are also keen on Trabzonspor’s Ugurcan Cakir and Dinamo Zagreb ace Dominik Livakovic.

Vlachodimos impressed during Benfica’s 1-1 draw with PSG last night, only being beaten by a Kylian Mbappe penalty.

He has made 185 appearances since joining the Portuguese giants from Panathinaikos in 2018, keeping an impressive 74 clean sheets.

Vlachodimos could have a job on his hands succeeding De Gea, however, with the Spaniard recently admitting that he’d like to stay at Old Trafford beyond his current deal.

The experienced United stopper told BT Sport: “I’m just very focused on the games helping the team as much as I can.

“Of course, I would like to be here for more years, so let’s see what happens in the future. I’m really, really happy here.”
