Man Utd legend urges club to bring back former star if they want to compete for Premier League title

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Jaap Stam believes a fellow ex-Red Devils star needs to be brought back to Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has made a positive start to life in England, guiding Man Utd to fifth place in the Premier League table prior to the World Cup break.

But they remain a way off challenging for the title – which they have not won since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

And Stam, who won the Treble with United in 1999, believes a former colleague of Ten Hag’s could help the club return to the glory years.

Legendary Man Utd keeper Edwin van der Sar, 52, has been on the board at Ajax since 2016.

He worked superbly with Ten Hag during the Dutch manager’s time with the Eredivisie giants.

And Stam, 50, feels the addition of Van der Sar – currently Ajax’s chief executive – would be a needed boost at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Football Betting, he said: “I think it would be very good for Manchester United if they bring back Edwin van der Sar.

“He’s been doing a very good job at Ajax.”

Stam then continued: “Manchester United eventually want to get back to being in the Champions League and competing for the league title every year so they need to bring in quality people who can do the business and if Edwin can do that then Manchester United need to go for it.

“I think it’s always good to bring former players in.”

Iconic keeper Van der Sar spent six years as a Man Utd player from 2005 to 2011.

He won multiple trophies with the club including four Premier League titles and the Champions League.

United have won just one league title since he left 11 years ago – which came in Ferguson’s final season with the club back in 2013.

They are also trophyless since their 2017 Europa League triumph under Jose Mourinho.
