There’s a risk with any managerial appointment, but United might have got this one spot on.

Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte are four of the very best managers in the world. They also happen to be employed at other clubs in the Premier League.

Alongside Bayern Munich’s Julian Nagelsmann, Ten Hag is leading the “best of the rest” and is a manager who is very much on the up.

United fans will be delighted with the Dutchman’s appointment, you only have to look on social media to get a sense of the mood.

There was always the feeling that Pochettino should have been offered the job three years ago, instead of Solskjaer, but the game is catching him up somewhat.

Ten Hag is the emerging force with something to prove in the Premier League having never managed in England before.

Style of play is regularly talked about, but it’s so important that United play with an identity.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

It’s hard to know what to expect during the first season but United supporters are a realistic bunch and we realise that we might have to write off Champions League qualification next campaign.

The team will look a lot different in 12 months by which time Ten Hag will have had two transfer windows and be about to embark on his second season with the club.

First season is a rebuild, second Champions League qualification, third year onwards, a trophy and some kind of title challenge.

We have to dream and we hope that United’s latest Erik, can after time, deliver.
