REAL MADRID boss Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly emerged as a potential short-term option for Manchester United.
Ancelotti has a close relationship with legendary Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is often asked for advice from his former club.
And according to ESPN, should United fail to land Ferguson’s first choice managerial target Mauricio Pochettino, Ancelotti has been recommended by the Scotsman as a short-term option.
The Italian, 62, is currently in charge of LaLiga table toppers Real and could have a fifth league title – in a fifth different country – under his belt come the summer.
And a manager with a title-winning pedigree is just what United are looking for.
Football director John Murtough wants to get the Red Devils back into title contention.
He said: “We are now conducting a thorough process for the appointment of a permanent manager who will take charge this summer with the objective to get us back to challenging for domestic and European titles.”
Whoever takes over the hotseat will be under considerable pressure to perform, something Ancelotti has proven time and time again.
Murtough added: “We know that consistency is key as we strive for a top-four finish this season.
“I want to reiterate, however, that this is not the ultimate objective for Manchester United — and everyone at the club is focused on challenging for the top trophies.”
Should United not land Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino or Ajax’s star Erik ten Hag, Ancelotti could form a wise partnership with current United interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
The German is set to move into an advisory role at the end of this season.
With Ancelotti’s vast experience in management and Rangnick’s expertise behind the scenes, the pair could help fire United back to the top.
