Jurgen Klopp says his failure to sign Son Heung-min was ‘one of biggest mistakes in my life’

LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted that failing to sign Heung-Min Son was one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

The South Korea star opted to sign for Bayer Leverkusen from Hamburg back in 2013 instead of linking up with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

Son eventually left Leverkusen for Tottenham in 2015 and has gone on to become one of the top wingers in Europe.

The 30-year-old, who missed the Reds’ 2-1 win on Sunday through injury, has registered 136 goals and 76 assists in 344 games for Spurs, and shared the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah last season.

But it could have been all so different had he signed for Dortmund.

Klopp told South Korean media last weekend: “One of the big mistakes in my life was that I didn’t sign him. Outstanding player.”

“World-class player and one of the best strikers in the world. Yeah, you should be proud.”

Son later spoke about snubbing Klopp.

He said: “I wanted to stay in the Bundesliga. Leverkusen and Dortmund wanted me.

“Both teams play in the Champions League but I thought Dortmund would use rotation more than Leverkusen.

“That’s why I chose Leverkusen over Dortmund.

“It’s really important to play regularly at my age.”

Klopp could end up getting his wish though, with reports claiming that Liverpool are plotting a move for the Tottenham star, who’s deal will have just two years left next summer.
