Josh Dasilva thumps home late equaliser to complete Bees comeback from two down

JOSH DASILVA struck gold to cap an unlikely comeback and earn Brentford a priceless point.

Leicester looked to be cruising to a comfortable win after a goal either side of the break from Timothy Castagne and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall gave them a deserved two-goal cushion.

But when Ivan Toney struck just beyond the hour to hold off Daniel Amartey and lash the ball beyond Danny Ward to halve the deficit, Leicester wilted.

And as Brentford suddenly realised the Foxes were there for the taking, Toney headed wide with the goal at his mercy.

Then former Arsenal kid Dasilva stunned the King Power when he surged forward from midfield, and as the Foxes backed off, he curled home a stunning equaliser which left Ward gasping as he grasped at thin air.

It wasn’t the way Brendan Rodgers wanted to mark a major milestone in his career as he clocked up his 170th match in charge of the Foxes.

It means Leicester City are now the club Rodgers has spent the most time with as he passed previous landmarks with Celtic (169 games) and Liverpool (166 games).

If only the Northern Irishman could be sure some of his star players will stick around to collect their own Foxes long-service awards one day too!

Premier rivals, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle United continue to stalk Wesley Fofana, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison – still hopeful of landing their prey before the transfer window closes.

Unfortunately for Rodgers all three of his coveted big-hitters showed why for an hour here as they enhanced their reputations.

However, the way the home side buckled at the first sign of concerted pressure will be of major concern to him and his disbelieving supporters.

Rodgers is still the only manager in Europe’s top five leagues who has yet to spend a penny this summer and the pessimists were predicting hard times ahead for the Foxes.

This collapse will have done nothing to dispel the notion.

In fact, many Leicester fans silently fear this could be the season their team drop out of the top 10 for the first time under Rodgers … or worse!

Club legend Kasper Schmeichel was absent for the opening game of the season for the first time in a dozen years, after moving to OGC Nice, and Brentford must have fancied their chances when they arrived.

Yet until Toney struck just after the hour mark, to spark their revival,  Leicester had looked in fine fettle – and a class above their opponents.

Rodgers is a crafty old Fox and had been secretly working on a formation he had kept under wraps throughout his pre-season games.

He lined up with a back three of Fofana, Jonny Evans and Daniel Amartey, with Wilfred Ndidi sweeping up in front of them.

A mobile midfield five provided plenty of movement behind veteran striker Jamie Vardy.

And to begin with it worked a treat as the home side cashed in on their pressure to finally make the breakthrough after 33 minutes.

Maddison delivered a corner with laser-like accuracy and Castagne burst in to power a header beyond David Raya.

Leicester almost doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Tielemans rattled the base of Raya’s post with a bouncing low effort.

Local hero Dewsbury-Hall showed him how it should be done 25 seconds after the restart when he fired home from 22 yards off the inside of the Brentford post.

At that point the points looked in the bag for Rodgers.

However, his side dropped deeper and deeper into a back five and Brentford went on the front foot.

Toney handed them a lifeline when he held off Amartey to smash his shot beyond Ward.

Then, to Brentford’s delight, sub Dasilva snatched a late point with his terrific finish.
