He said that Riyad Mahrez was subbed on the dramatic final day of last season because he “played like Almiron”.

The City midfielder, whose side head to Newcastle on Sunday, was roughed up by Almiron’s Paraguay team-mates during their pre-season clash with Mexican side Club America.

Asked if there was a danger of his side doing more of the same, Magpies boss Howe said: “We need to keep 11 players on the pitch.

“We need to play with cool heads. We need to have fire in our hearts but we need to play with discipline. We can’t lose that.”

On Grealish’s comments and its impact on Toon’s £20.7million attacker, Howe added: “I haven’t broached it with Miggy, I don’t think it’s something we really need to discuss.

“I see a very happy person who is in a really good place.

“I don’t see someone who needs extra motivation.”

Howe added: “I’ve used all sorts of ways to try to motivate my players over the years.

“I’d never rule anything out if I felt it was appropriate and would get extra.

“My players are motivated to play well for Newcastle and for themselves and their families but if there was a way of doing that, yeah, I’d use it.

“I’m not going to comment on this situation but, certainly, we’re highly motivated for the game.”

City are yet to concede a goal in the Premier League this season and both teams are undefeated heading into the clash at St James’ Park.
