THE Premier League is heading towards the final day of the season.

There will be four teams heading into the Champions League for next season, but with Liverpool in the Champions League final, does this change anything regarding a potential extra place for the Premier League?

How many teams from one country are allowed to play in the Champions League?

The maximum any country can have playing in the Champions League is five.

Only England, Spain, Germany and Italy can possibly enter five teams as they are the top four associations in Uefa and are awarded the four coveted spots.

It used to be only four regardless of what happened in the previous season, until the Europa League winner was given a Champions League place.

In 2012, Spurs finished in fourth place and missed out on the Champions League after Chelsea won it.

But with UEFA’s new expansion idea, soon a team which finishes fifth in the Premier League may also qualify for the Champions League.

Had these rules been implemented this season, Tottenham would be on the verge of qualification.

But the rules won’t be put into affect until the 2024/25 season.

Could the fourth-placed Premier League team miss out on Champions League?

Yes, but there is only one way in which this can happen.

The fourth placed Premier League team will miss out on a spot in the Champions League if English teams outside the top four win both the Champions League and Europa League.

But this cannot occur this season as there are no teams in the Premier League outside the top four who are in the running for to win any European competitions.
